چکیده

We present far ultraviolet spectra of a fast (∼ 300 km s) nonradiative shock in the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant. Our observations were performed with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) satellite, covering the wavelength range 905−1187 Å. The purpose of these observations was to estimate the degree of electron-ion equilibration by (1) examining the variation of O VI λλ1032, 1038 intensity with position behind the shock, and (2) measuring the widths of the OVI lines. We find significant absorption near the center of the O VI λ1032 line, with less absorption in O VI λ1038. The absorption equivalent widths imply an O VI column density greatly exceeding that of interstellar O VI along the Cygnus Loop line of sight. We suggest that the absorption may be due to resonant scattering by O VI ions within the shock itself. The widths of the O VI emission lines imply efficient ion-ion equilibration, in agreement with predictions from Balmer-dominated spectra of this shock.

Balmer-Dominated Spectra of Nonradiative Shocks in the Cygnus Loop, RCW 86 and Tycho Supernova Remnants

We present an observational and theoretical study of the optical emission from nonradiative shocks in three supernova remnants: the Cygnus Loop, RCW 86 and Tycho. The spectra of these shocks are dominated by collisionally excited hydrogen Balmer lines which have both a broad component caused by proton-neutral charge exchange and a narrow component caused by excitation of cold neutrals entering ...

4 Environmental Impact on the Southeast Limb of the Cygnus Loop

We analyze observations from the Chandra X-ray Observatory of the southeast knot of the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant. In this region, the blast wave propagates through an inhomogeneous environment. Extrinsic differences and subsequent multiple projections along the line of sight rather than intrinsic shock variations, such as fluid instabilities, account for the apparent complexity of the imag...

The Physics of Supernova Remnant Blast Waves. II. Electron-Ion Equilibration in DEM L71 in the Large Magellanic Cloud

We present analysis and modeling of X-ray spectra from the blast wave shock of DEM L71 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This remnant exhibits widespread Balmer-dominated emission characteristic of nonradiative shocks in partially neutral gas. We have used both Chandra ACISS data and optical Fabry-Perot spectra of the blast wave to measure the electron and proton temperatures, respectively. In pri...

FUSE Observations of the Cygnus Loop : O VI Emission from a Nonradiative Shock 1

We present Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) observations of a Balmer filament in the northeast region of the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant. The data consist of one spectrum obtained through the 30 × 30 (LWRS) aperture and three spectra at adjacent positions obtained through the 4 × 20 (MDRS) aperture. The nonradiative shocks in the region giving rise to these faint optical filament...

The Role of Diffusive Shock Acceleration on Non-equilibrium Ionization in Supernova Remnants

We present results of semi-analytic calculations which show clear evidence for changes in the nonequilibrium ionization behind a supernova remnant forward shock undergoing efficient diffusive shock acceleration (DSA). The efficient acceleration of particles (i.e., cosmic rays) lowers the shock temperature and raises the density of the shocked gas, thus altering the ionization state of the plasm...
